## The five pillars of Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials helps organisations stay safe by ensuring five technical controls are in place.

- **Firewalls**  
  Protecting private networks from unauthorised access by using firewalls and controlling inbound and outbound connections.

- **Secure configuration**  
  Ensuring systems are configured securely by removing unnecessary software, default passwords and accounts.

- **Security update management**  
  Keeping all software and systems up to date by applying security patches within 14 days of release.

- **User access control**  
  Securing user accounts with strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, and limiting user access to only what is necessary.

- **Malware protection**  
  Installing and maintaining anti-malware software on all devices to prevent viruses and other malicious software from getting in.
